After a stressful couple weeks at school Scott and I decided that we needed a mini getaway to help us relax. We decided to spend a night at the Eastern Mangroves Resort and it did not disappoint! From the moment we arrived we were treated like royalty. When checking in the woman took our reservation, invited us to sit in the lounge and drink various Arabian teas and eat dates while she printed our information:
We were only on the first floor but we had pretty flower bushes outside and beyond that the mangroves. We saw many birds, cranes, and other wildlife. It was nice to be away from the city and surrounded by the sounds of birds.
Here are some more pics of the hotel – it was luxurious.
We were so impressed with the hotel that we decided to just stay in and eat at one of their restaurants. So we chose Thai . . .
At one point the mangroves got more narrow and the water more shallow. Our tour guide Matt explained to us how the mangroves in the UAE work. The low laying trees bury their roots into the sand, but the sand provides no oxygen for the trees. So, the roots twist up and pop back out of the sand (you can sort of see the small roots in the water in the picture above). These roots then take in the saltwater and filter out the salt! The salt is released through the trees’ leaves giving them a white coloration – thus these mangroves are classified as white mangrove – how cool is nature?! We also saw many types of crabs and fish.
We then took a brief break and docked on the shore for a while. We saw some hermit crabs and collected sea shells.
A truly perfect weekend.
